SUNNYVALE, Calif.- The eighth-ranked Washington softball team (17-5) defeated Pac-10 foe and 20th-ranked Arizona State 5-0 this evening in the National Invitational Softball Tournament semifinal. With the victory, UW advances to tomorrow's tournament championship against No. 3 California at 11 a.m.
Junior pitcher Ashley Boek (9-2) picked up her third-straight shutout victory as she held the Sun Devils to three hits and struck out eight. The win marked Boek's fourth in two days as she has thrown every inning for the Dawgs this tournament.
The Huskies jumped out on top early, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. A walk to Sarah Hyatt and a dropped fly ball on a Kristen Rivera pop-up placed runners on second and third. Dena Tyson then laced a line drive into right field to score two runs.
Washington scored three insurance runs in the fifth inning on a three-run home run by Rivera. The hit scored Rita Roach, who had been hit by a pitch, and Hyatt, who had reached base on an error.
The Huskies have won four games in a row and will face the Cal Bears tomorrow in the 11 a.m. championship game. Washington has won the NIST twice (1995, 1996), while California has won the tournament five times, including last season's crown.
