Washington Softball Downs San Diego State In Season Opener

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The fifth ranked Washington softball team (1-0) rolled to an 8-0 victory over San Diego State (0-1) in five innings this evening to open the 2004 season at the Long Beach State Invitational.
Washington scored eight runs on eight hits en route to the mercy-rule victory and was led by senior Amanda Oleson and sophomore Sarah Hyatt with two hits apiece.
The Huskies jumped on board in the second inning with a pair of runs. Sophomore All-American Kristen Rivera (Perris, Calif.) led off the inning with a solo home run over the left field fence. Kathy Fiske (Temecula, Calif.) followed with a single up the middle and scored after a stolen base and a Hyatt single.
UW scored five unearned runs in the fifth inning, sparked by three hits and four Aztec errors. Oleson had a RBI-single to right field that scored Dominique Lastrapes (Laguna Hills, Calif.). An error on the play also scored Courtney Jeffries (Eugene, Ore.) and moved Oleson to third base. Rivera drew a walk and a SDSU wild pitch scored Oleson and put Rivera on second base. Another San Diego State fielding error plated Rivera and sophomore Dena Tyson scored from third when Aimee Minor drew a throw to second on a stolen base.
Washington put the game away in the fifth inning when Minor walked and scored on a Hyatt double off the left field fence. The run lifted UW to an eight-run lead to invoke the mercy-rule and end the game.
Junior Ashley Boek (Redding, Calif.) picked up the win as she held the Aztecs to one hit over three innings while striking out one. Senior Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.) pitched two innings of relief, notching a pair of strikeouts.
Washington continues tournament play tomorrow with games against No. 1-ranked UCLA (4:30 p.m.) and tournament host Long Beach State (6:30 p.m.)
