RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Pac-10 rival Oregon State handed the 22nd-ranked Washington baseball team its second straight loss Sunday, outslugging the Huskies, 13-8, in a non-conference game on the final day of the Riverside Baseball Invitational.
The Huskies (6-3) had won six straight prior to a 9-8, ninth-inning loss to UC Riverside Saturday. The Beavers, who suffered their first loss of the season Saturday, improved to 8-1 on the year.
OSU catcher Paul Richie led the Beaver offense, going 4-for-5 with four singles and four runs batted in. Beaver center fielder Aaron Mathews also finished the game 4-for-5 with two RBI and a triple.
UW sophomore starter Keaton Everitt (2-1) had the roughest start of his brief career. The 6-foot-7 righty from Kirkland had allowed only one run on three hits over 12 innings in his two previous starts, but left Sunday's game in the fourth inning, having allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits over three and one-third innings.
OSU freshman Kevin Gunderson (3-0) earned the win in relief of fellow freshman Jonah Nickerson. Gunderson threw three innings, allowing one run on two hits. Another freshman, Dallas Buck, threw the final two and two-thirds for his fourth save.
Washington took advantage of a hit batter and a walk to score a pair of runs in the top of the first. Greg Isaacson was hit by a pitch to start the game and, after an out, Brent Lillibridge reached on a walk. After a second out, Nick Batkoski looped a single to right to score Isaacson and catcher Matt Lane reached on a infield single to plate Lillibridge, giving the UW a 2-0 lead.
Oregon State struck back with two in the bottom of the first. Richie reached when his sharp grounder was snared by Isaacson, the Husky second baseman, whose overthrow to first allowed Richie to reach second. After a bunt moved Richie to third, Andy Jenkins chopped a double down the left-field line to send Richie home. After Mike Hass walked, Shea McFeely lined a single up the middle and OSU moved into a 2-2 tie.
In the second inning, the Beavers tacked on four more as, with two outs and runners at second and third, Richie bounced a single up the middle to drive in two. Chris Campos followed by drilling a long fly to center that dropped for a triple to drive in Richie. The relay throw, however, got past third baseman John Otness and into the UW dugout, allowing Campos to score OSU's sixth run.
Washington cut the OSU lead to 6-5 with three in the third. Lane, the UW's freshman catcher, drove in the first with a no-out, bases-loaded sacrifice fly before senior third baseman John Otness doubled down the left-field line to send home two more.
OSU added a run in the fourth when Chris Kunda doubled and scored on Richie's third single of the game. In the fifth, OSU scored four more. Beavers shortstop Tony Calderon singled to drive home Mike Hass, and Mathews tripled home Calderon. Chris Kunda followed with a single and pinch hitter Mike Lissman drove home the fourth with another two-out single and the Beavers' lead was stretched to 11-5.
Washington scored three runs in the seventh. Lane was hit by a pitch to lead off and scoredon a two-out double from Ben Johnson. Johnson then scored on a single from Greg Isaacson, and Isaacson stole second and scored on a Zach Clem single, cutting the OSU lead to 11-8.
Lillibridge extended his hitting streak to 14 games, dating back to last season, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Next up, the UW plays host to Missouri in a three-game series at Husky Ballpark Friday through Sunday.
