SEATTLE - Redshirt sophomore Keaton Everitt allowed only one hit over seven innings, combining with two other Washington pitchers for a two-hit shutout as the 23rd-ranked Huskies beat Gonzaga, 3-0, Sunday at Husky Ballpark. Washington (5-1) won all three games in the series to increase its win streak to five. It was the UW's first series sweep (three games or more) of Gonzaga since 1993.
Everitt (2-0), a 6-foot-7 righty from Kirkland (Juanita HS), was making his second career start after having thrown only three career innings entering this season. He faced only two batters over the minimum in his seven innings, surrendering a single to Marshall Bratton, walking one and striking out two. Freshman Kyle Parker faced only three batters in the eighth inning and junior closer Will Fenton gave up a single, but struck out two in the ninth to record his second save of the season.
Washington got the lead with a two-out rally in the third inning. Brent Lillibridge singled to get it started and junior center fielder Taylor Johnson ripped his first home run of the season to give the UW a 2-0 lead. In the sixth, the Huskies added their other tally as Aaron Hathaway singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from senior John Otness.
Gonzaga starter Patrick Donovan (0-1) suffered the loss despite a solid outing. He gave up six hits and three runs over six innings. The Bulldogs fell to 2-5 on the season.
Washington returns to the road next weekend, traveling to the RBI Tournament in Riverside. The Huskies will face Sacramento State, UC Riverside and Oregon State. The Huskies' next home action comes in a three-game series vs. Missouri the following weekend, March 5-7.
