Hoe, Sumantri and Carter Lead Huskies Into Finals of Pac-10 Indoors
SEATTLE, Wash. - Washington senior Erin Hoe will lead the Huskies into the final day of the Pac-10 Indoor Championships after reaching the final of the second singles flight Saturday night. Hoe (Mililani, Hawaii) continued her impressive march through the tournament by defeating second-seeded Nicole Havlicek from Cal 6-4, 7-5. Hoe has yet to lose a set in the tournament and will face another Golden Bear, Jieun Jacobs, in a matchup of unseeded foes.
Joining Hoe in tomorrow's final round action will be Washington's All-American doubles tandem of senior Claire Carter (Nottingham, England) and junior Dea Sumantri (Jakarta, Indonesia) in the final of the top doubles flight. The duo, ranked 29th nationally and seeded third in the tournament, knocked off the second seeded team of Diane Hollands and Maja Maklar from Arizona 8-5 in their Saturday night semifinal. Up next the Husky women face California's Jacobs, in her second final versus a Washington foe, and her partner Raquel Kops-Jones, the second ranked singles player in the nation.
The second flight final came close to being an all-Husky affair, as Jacobs narrowly defeated Washington sophomore Dinka Hadzic (Split, Croatia) in three sets. Hadzic won the first set and took the second into a tiebreak before succumbing 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3.
Sumantri's doubles duty came after her singles run came to an end in the semis of the top singles flight, where she lost 7-5, 6-1 to the second seed, and 8th-ranked Daria Panova of Oregon. In the previous round late Friday night, Sumantri upset the third seed and 17th-ranked Jackie Carlton of UCLA 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to set up her semifinal appearance
Accounting for three out of the eight semifinal spots in the top two singles flights, Washington equaled California's total for the most semifinal representatives. No other school had more than one semifinalist.
The tournament concludes Sunday morning with the final matches in all flights, with play beginning at 9 a.m.
