SEATTLE, Wash. - A long weekend at the 2004 Pac-10 Women's Tennis Indoor Championships at Nordstrom Tennis Center came to a close Sunday afternoon as Washington's Claire Carter and Dea Sumantri rallied to win the top flight doubles crown, 9-7, over Jieun Jacobs and Raquel Kops-Jones of Cal.
With the match tied at 7, the Huskies faced break point on their serve but won the next three points to hold serve. A return of serve forehand winner up the line from the junior Sumantri set up double match point for the Huskies, and a Cal error ended the tournament and gave the Huskies the title.
For the senior All-American Carter (Nottingham, England) it was her second straight trip to the doubles final, having fallen short last year with the now departed Darija Klaic. Carter and Sumantri (Jakarta, Indonesia) are currently ranked 29th nationally and were the tournament's third seed.
Jacobs and Kops-Jones were unseeded, however Kops-Jones is the number 2 singles player in the country and Jacobs had already proved to be a pesky thorn in Washington's side. Jacobs was 3-0 against Washington opponents in the tournament, including her victory earlier in the day against Husky senior Erin Hoe in the Flight II Singles title, but Carter and Sumantri were able to exact a degree of revenge.
In the final match of the Flight II Singles draw, Hoe (Mililani, Hawaii) became the third straight Husky to fall victim to Jacobs, losing two competitive sets 7-5, 6-3. Jacobs had come within mere points of losing in straight sets to Husky sophomore Dinka Hadzic in the semifinals but survived a second-set tiebreak and took the match in three sets. Jacobs also needed to overcome a one set deficit to upset top seeded UW freshman Saskia Nauenberg in three sets in the quarterfinals.
It was the second straight year in which Hoe (Mililani, Hawaii) competed in a singles final at the Pac-10 Indoors. She was the runner-up in the third singles flight last year, losing in straight sets to Cal's Nicole Havlicek. Hoe was able to return the favor this year, winning a semifinal rematch between the two in similar straight set fashion Saturday night.
Jacobs had championship experience on her side, having won the same second singles flight two years ago at the 2002 Pac-10 Indoor Championships. All that interrupted a possible three-peat for Jacobs was a semifinal loss to Washington's Dea Sumantri in last year's tournament, Sumantri went on to claim the 2003 second flight title.
The tournament's top title went to another familiar face. Defending champion Daria Panova of Oregon used her powerful groundstrokes to blast her way to victory in the first singles flight for the second consecutive year. Panova, ranked 8th nationally, was the tournament's second seed and dropped only one set in reaching the finals, where she defeated unseeded Daniella Bercek of UCLA 6-4, 6-3.
Seventh-ranked Washington opens the 2004 dual season hosting Portland, Friday, Jan. 23, at 1:30 p.m. and Idaho, Sunday, Jan. 25, at noon. Both matches will be held at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
