HOUSTON - The Washington baseball team staved off elimination from its NCAA Regional with a 4-2 win over Harvard Saturday at Reckling Park. The Crimson were eliminated from the postseason while the Huskies will take on the loser of this afternoon's winners' bracket game between Rice and Texas Tech.
Husky junior Sean White (Mercer Island) picked up his sixth straight victory to improve to 7-2 on the season. White threw his first career complete game, using only 101 pitches to go the distance. He allowed the two runs on seven hits while striking out six.
"Sean has pitched great the last two months," said Husky coach Ken Knutson. "He's a big reason that we're here."
White out-dueled Harvard ace Ben Crockett (6-4), a projected early pick in next week's draft. Crockett took the loss despite breaking the Crimson record for single-season strikeouts. He fanned nine Huskies over his nine innings to run his season total to 117 strikeouts on the season, breaking Ray Peters' 1968 mark of 115.
The Crimson (20-26), champions of the Ivy League, opened the scoring in the third inning. Bryan Hale, a graduate of Seattle's Lakeside High, laced a one-out triple down the right- field line and scored when leadoff hitter Ian Wallace singled through the Huskies' drawn-in infield, staking Harvard with a 1-0 lead.
Washington (31-26-1) came back in the fourth inning with a two-out, five-hit rally, scoring all four of its runs in the game. Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) started the rally with a double down the left-field line. He scored when DH John Otness (Tacoma/Wilson) blasted a double to the track in left-center.
Aaron Hathaway (Vancouver/Columbia River) singled to right to send home Otness with the UW's second run before Greg Isaacson (Aberdeen) belted a triple to right, driving home Hathaway. Taylor Johnson (Vancouver/Skyview) reached on a bunt single to send in Hatahway and the Huskies led 4-1.
Harvard designated hitter Trey Hendricks, a Houston native playing in his home town, led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run to right, his team-leading sixth of the year.
Garthwaite led the Huskies at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double. Otness went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty) also added two hits.
The Huskies take on the loser of the Texas Tech-Rice game tonight at 5:00 p.m. PDT. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Texas Tech-Rice game tomorrow in the championship round, needing to win two games to advance to the Super Regional.
