SEATTLE - Junior Sean White won his fifth straight decision and the Washington baseball team hung on to second place in the Pac-10 with an 8-3 win over Arizona Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
The Huskies (15-8 in the Pac-10, 30-24-1 overall) remained in a tie for second with Stanford, which won its second straight game against WSU. The UW and Cardinal trail USC (which was ahead of UCLA 13-10 in the eighth inning in their game) by one game going into the final day of the season Sunday. Arizona, in eighth place in the conference, fell to 8-15 and 30-24 overall.
White, a right-hander from Mercer Island, improved to 6-2 after starting the season 1-2. He allowed only one run on five hits and no walks while striking out seven in eight innings.
Arizona opened the scoring with a run in the third when John Hardy singled, stole second and scored on a two-out single from Brad Hassey.
In the bottom of the third, the Huskies scored two runs to move in front, 2-1. Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty) and Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) walked and moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Freshman first baseman Kyle Larsen (Redmond/Eastlake) followed with a single to center to drive in both runners.
The Huskies rallied for six runs with two outs in the sixth to put the game away as UA starter Joe Little ran in to more trouble with walks, puttingJohn Otness (Tacoma/Wilson) and Greg Isaacson (Aberdeen) aboard on bases on balls. Left fielder Mike Wagner (Woodinville) doubled down the left-field line to drive in Otness, and Little threw a wild pitch to bring home Isaacson.
The two-out rally continued as Little walked Reynolds before being relieved by Wes Zlotoff. Davidson and Larsen greeted Zlotoff with back-to-back doubles, and freshman catcher Aaron Hathaway hit an RBI single as seven straight Huskies reached base after there were two out and none on.
Arizona got two runs in the ninth when freshman third baseman John Hardy belted a two-run homer, his fifth of the season. Little (6-6) worked five and two- thirds innings in the loss.
The Huskies and Wildcats close out the regular season Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game. Monday, the UW finds out if it has made the NCAA tournament. The 64-team field will be announced at 9:30 a.m. on ESPN2.
