CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State avoided a series sweep and broke a five-game losing streak Sunday as the Beavers beat the Washington baseball team, 5-3, at Goss Stadium. The Beavers haven't been swept at home by the Huskies since 1979.
Washington (13-8 in the Pac-10, 28-24-1 overall) fell into a second-place tie with Stanford with three games remaining the regular season. Oregon State kept its postseason hopes alive, improving to 10-11 in the conference and 31-20 overall.
OSU starter Mark McLemore (3-5) threw a career-high six and two-thirds innings for the win, allowing three runs on nine hits. Husky senior Zack Daniels (Fircrest/Charles Wright) allowed five runs, only two of which were earned, over six and a third to fall to 2-1.
The Beavers took an early 3-0 lead with three unearned runs in the first. Leadoff hitter Aaron Mathews reached on a fielding error by Husky second baseman Greg Isaacson (Aberdeen) and then moved to second on a passed ball. After a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, he scored on a two-out single from Chris McBride. Seth Pietsch followed with a homer to left to give OSU its second and third runs.
Washington cut the OSU lead to 3-2 with a pair of third-inning runs. Isaacson singled, moved to third on a single from Mike Wagner (Woodinville) and then scored on a third straight single from Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty). Wagner came across to score when Kyle Larsen (Redmond/Eastlake) grounded into a double play.
OSU made it 4-2 in the bottom of the third when Mathews singled and eventually scored on a Brian Barden sacrifice fly. Washington didn't score again until the seventh. With Isaacson and Michael Done (Littleton, Colo.) at second and third, Mike Wagner (Woodinville) had a ground ball stopped by a diving Will Hudson, the OSU shortstop. Done scored on the infield single to cut OSU's lead to 4-3, but Hudson's stop kept Isaacson from scoring the tying run.
After the seventh-inning stretch, the Beavers tacked on a fifth run when, with runners at first and third and two outs, Husky freshman reliever Will Fenton (Kingston/North Kitsap) balked, allowing J.R. Runyon to score from third base to make it 5-3.
The Huskies close out the regular season next weekend at Husky Balllpark as Arizona comes to Seattle for a three-game series. Friday's opener is at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday's games both start at 1:00 p.m. Some or all of the games may be on radio. That information will be announced later this week.
