SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team closed out its non-conference play for the year by splitting a doubleheader with Gonzaga Tuesday at Husky Ballpark. The Zags took game one, 12-10, before the Huskies won the nightcap, 10-3.
The split moved the UW's record to 26-23-1 on the season while Gonzaga is now 26-27.
In the first game, Gonzaga slugger Nate Gold, who leads the nation in home runs, belted his 31st of the year, a three-run shot, to break a 9-9 tie in the seventh. The homer set a new West Coast Conference single-season record, formerly held by San Francisco's Tag Bozied (30 in 1999).
The Huskies had taken an 8-4 lead with a six-run fourth inning as shortstop Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty) hit a two-run home run and Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) belted a three-run shot in the frame.
Sam Hess went 4-for-5 and John Gebbers had four RBI to lead the Zags in the opener. The Huskies were led by junior Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian), who had two doubles and a ninth-inning solo home run. The UW also got three hits and two runs batted in from freshman catcher Aaron Hathaway (Vancouver/Columbia River).
GU reliever Kemp Quackenbush (1-0) allowed one run over four innings for the game-one victory while UW freshman reliever Josh Conover (Kirkland/Lake Washington), who surrendered the Gold homer, suffered the loss to fall to 0-1.
In the second game, the UW scored two runs in each of the first two innings and never trailed. Senior starter Zack Daniels (Fircrest/Charles Wright) threw his first career complete game, allowing seven hits, for the victory to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Sophomore John Otness (Tacoma/Wilson) went 4-for-4 in the nightcap. Freshman right fielder Taylor Johnson (Vancouver/Skyview) hit a solo home run and went 2-for-6 in game two while freshman shortstop Nick Batkoski (Federal Way) had two doubles in three at bats.
Gonzaga starter Steve Hare (0-1) went only two innings in the loss while Gold belted his second homer of the doubleheader and 32nd of the year. Kemp Quackenbush, who earned the win in game one, hit a homer as the DH in game two.
The Huskies' next action is at Oregon State this Friday through Sunday. The series opener is Friday at 5:00 p.m. with games on Saturday and Sunday both begin at 1:00 p.m.
