SEATTLE - Gonzaga scored two runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to overcome a 5-2 deficit and hand the Washington baseball team a 7-5 loss Wednesday night in the second game of a two-game non-conference series. The Zags (16-14) swept the pair of games from the Huskies (12-12-1).
Husky starter Clay Johnson, making his first start in a month, pitched well, but got no decision. The sophomore from Elma worked the first six innings, allowing only two runs on three hits while striking out six. Reliever Greg Colburn (Helena, Mont.) suffered the loss, allowing the three runs in the eighth.
Gonzaga sophmore reliever Matt Reding picked up his first career victory, working the final three innings, holding the Huskies to only one hit while striking out two.
After being held scoreless through the first three innings, the Huskies strung together three runs in the fourth on five hits and a sacrifice fly. A sac fly from Michael Done (Littleton, Colo.) opened the scoring and a double from DH John Otness (Tacoma/Wilson) drove in the second run. An RBI single by catcher Aaron Hathaway (Vancouver/Columbia River) drove in the third run of the inning.
The Zags battled back with single runs in the fourth and fifth. Nate Gold singled to drive in Grant Zurmely in the fourth before Kyle Rajsich walked and eventually scored on a groundout in the fifth.
Washington added two more in the fifth after Steve Hare had come on to relieve for the Bulldogs. Hare loaded the bases before walking UW first baseman Bryan Johnson (Ephrata). Done followed with his second sacrifice fly, this one to the warning track in center field, and the Huskies led 5-2.
After the Bulldogs scored a pair of runs in the seventh on a run-scoring double from Sam Hess and an RBI single by Kevin Cave, catcher Kevin Richardson tied it at 5-5 in the eighth when he led off the inning with his seventh home run of the season.
Gonzaga pulled ahead later in the eighth when Jeff Culpepper was hit by a pitch and eventually came around on a passed ball. Brian Munhall made it 7-5 when he scored on a fielder's choice.
Richardson, who's homer tied the game, struck out in his other four at bats. The Zags got two hits from Hesss to lead the offense. Bryan Johnson, Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) and Mike Wagner (Woodinville) each had two hits for Washington.
The Huskies return to the road this weekend for a three-game series at Missouri. All three games will air on radio via the Tigers' website: www.mutigers.com.
