SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team built a 10-4 lead thanks to five home runs, but had to hold on to win as Washington State scored five in the ninth. The Huskies took game two of the three-game series, 10-9, throwing the tying run out at the plate and then leaving another potential tying run at second in the ninth inning Saturday afternoon at Husky Ballpark.
Trailing 2-0 going into the bottom of the second, the Huskies got solo homers from junior Bryan Johnson (Ephrata), senior Michael Done (Littleton, Colo.) and freshman Aaron Hathaway (Vancouver/Columbia River) to take a 3-2 lead.
A five-run Husky inning in the third was highlighted by a two-run homer from sophomore DH John Otness and Johnson added his second homer of the day and seventh of the season in the sixth inning, providing what proved to be the winning runs.
In the ninth, down 10-4, the Cougars rallied as the first five batters of the inning reached base and scored, helped along by two Husky errors. With Justin Hart at third base representing the tying run with one out, Husky closer Tyler Shepple (Arvada, Colo.) got Jeff LaRue to ground sharply to shortstop Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty). Reynolds threw home and got Hart in a rundown, allowing LaRue to reach second before the tag was applied for the second out.
Shepple then struck out former Washington outfielder Tyson Boston, who transferred to WSU after the 1999 season, to end the game.
Husky starter Sean White (Mercer Island) scattered 11 hits, all singles, over six and two- thirds innings to improve his record to 3-2 on the season. WSU's Garrett Alwert gave up five runs over two and two-thirds for the loss as WSU fell to 14-19 overall and 2-6 in the Pac-10.
Johnons finished 2-for-2 with two homers and three RBI for the Huskies (14-17-1, 2-3) while Done finished with a single, a double and a homer in four at bats. The Cougars got three hits and five runs batted in from Hart while Bookie Gates went 4-for-5 with four singles.
The Huskies and Cougars wrap up the series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The game will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
