PORTLAND, Ore. - Pitchers Jeff Petersen, Trevor Gibson and Scott Robertson combined on a four-hit shutout as the Washington baseball team gained revenge for last Tuesday's 11-10 loss at Portland with a 10-0 victory over the Pilots Tuesday afternoon at Pilot Stadium.
Washington (7-5), which scored five runs in the first inning last Tuesday at Portland before allowing nine UP runs in the second, posted six runs in the first inning this time around.
An error by left fielder Joe Watson on a single by UW second baseman Michael Done (Littleton, Colo.) led to the first two runs. A wild pitch allowed Done to score, and after a single by Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) and a walk to Bryan Johnson (Ephrata), Husky junior Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) belted a ball over the wall in left to give the UW a 6-0 lead.
In the fifth, the Huskies made it 9-0, scoring three runs thanks in part to three Portland errors. In the inning, shortstop Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty), who had been hit by a pitch twice and struck out in his first three plate appearances, singled to drive in a run and extend his hitting streak to 12 games.
Reynolds stole second base and the throw from catcher Brock Griffin went wild, allowing Brandon Jacobson (Issaquah) to score the third running of the inning from third base. Catcher Ben Johnson (Bellevue) homered in ninth to cap the UW scoring at 10 runs.
Petersen, a sophomore from Kent (Kentwood), allowed no runs and three hits over five innings to earn his first victory of the season. Petersen, who walked six batters over five frames, left nine Portland runners on base, including five in scoring position.
Gibson, a sophomore from Enumclaw, allowed only a bunt single in his three innings, striking out seven, including the final three batters in the eighth with runners at second and third base. Junior Scott Robertson threw a no-hit ninth to close out the game.
Shorewood High grad Jeff Cambers, making his first appearance of the season, suffered the loss for the Pilots (5-6), allowing six runs on five hits while not recording an out in the first inning.
Reynolds finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a steal. Jacobson went 3-for-5 with two runs while Davidson and Garthwaite each finished with two hits in four at bats.
Friday through Sunday, the Huskies play host to UC Riverside in the second of three straight home weekends. Friday night's series opener begins at 6:30 p.m.
