MESA, Ariz. - Husky ace Shawn Kohn suffered his first loss of the season Saturday as the Washington baseball team fell to 15th-ranked Arizona State, 13-6, as the Devils came back after a loss in the series opener to win the three-game set, two games to one.
Kohn, a senior from Woodinville, had won each of his previous six starts entering the game, but gave up an uncharacteristic 14 hits in six innings of work. The right-hander allowed eight runs (six earned) while walking two and striking out six.
The Devils (4-2 Pac-10, 20-10 overall) pitched by committee, sending junior Carlos Aguello to the mound for his first career start. Arguello, who relieved in Thursday's game, lasted only three and one-third innings, allowing two runs on five hits.
Down 7-2, the Huskies (1-2, 12-10-1) drew to within three runs in the sixth when sophomore left fielder Mike Wagner (Woodinville) belted a long, two-run homer over the left field fence, his first of the season.
In the seventh, junior Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) went the opposite way with a two-run homer to cut the ASU lead to one run at 7-6. The homer was Garthwaite's ninth of the year and fourth in five games this week. Last year, he led the team with 46 runs batted in, but already has 42 RBI through only 23 games in 2002.
The Devils, however, drew away with four runs in the seventh. After loading the bases on a double, a single and a walk, Husky reliever Trevor Gibson (Enumclaw) was nearly out of the jam thanks to a popout and a strikeout, but a wild pitch allowed one run to score and reliever Tyler Shepple (Arvada, Colo.) walked in a run and then gave up a two-run single to DH Jeff Larish to give ASU an 11-6 lead.
Garthwaite, who also drove in a pair of runs with a single in the third, finished 2-for-4 with four runs batted in. ASU was led by three hits each from Dustin Pedroia and Dennis Wyrick and a 2-for-4 outing from Jeremy West, who cracked a double and a home run.
Arguello, despite the short outing, was credited with the win to improve to 1-0.
The Huskies return to Husky Ballpark this Tuesday and Wednesday for 6:30 p.m. games against Gonzaga before hitting the road next weekend to play a three-game series against Missouri in Columbia, Mo.
