MESA, Ariz. - After trailing 8-1 after three innings, the Washington baseball team scored eight runs in the seventh inning to complete a comeback and then hung on to beat No. 15 Arizona State, 14-11, in the Huskies' Pac-10 opener Thursday evening at Hohokam Park.
The Huskies (12-8-1, 1-0) entered the seventh inning trailing 8-4, but the first eight batters of the inning reached base and scored, taking advantage of five hits, three walks and a hit batter off of four different Sun Devil relievers. Junior slugger Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) cleared the bases with a three-run double to to the game and catcher Ben Johnson (Bellevue) singled to plate Garthwaite to give the Huskies their first lead.
Garthwaite, who had seven RBI in the two games earlier this week at Washington State, finished the game 2-for-5 with a double, a homer and five runs batted in. Shortstop Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty) added three hits, two RBI and two runs for Washington.
ASU got three hits apeice from Jeremy West and Dustin Pedroia, who both finished with three-quarters of the cycle. West fell a triple short while Pedroia missed out on the home run.
UW starter Shawn White (Mercer Island), who gave up eight runs, stuck around long enough to get the win to improve to 2-2 on the year. ASU reliever J.J. Jackson (3-1) suffered the loss while Husky closer Tyler Shepple (Arvada, Colo.) picked up his fourth save, throwing the final two and two-thirds innings. Shepple walked two in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate, but West flied out to center to end the game.
As they've made a habit of doing this season, the Sun Devils (18-10, 2-2) jumped out to an early lead. After an error and a walk put runners on base in the first inning, West belted a three-run homer, his seventh of the year, to open the scoring. After an Andre Ethier single, Pedroia and Jon Sheaffer came up with back-to-back triples to put ASU in front, 5-0, after one inning.
After a single from UW third baseman Michael Done (Littleton, Colo.) pushed a run across in the top of the second, the Devils scored another in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double from West. ASU scored two more in the third when Steve Garrabrants' two-out triple drove home two runners.
In the fourth, Garthwaite smashed a two-run homer deep over the wall in left- center with Kyle Larsen (Redmond/Eastlake) aboard. Garthwaite's blast marked his fourth straight game with a home run and his fifth in six games. His season total of eight leads the team.
The Huskies and Sun Devils continue the series with a 6:00 p.m. (MST) game Friday and a 1:00 p.m. (MST) game Saturday. Both games will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
