FRESNO, Calif. - Down 6-0 after an inning and a half, Fresno State came back to beat the Washington baseball team 13-9 Saturday in the second game of a three-game series at Beiden Field.
The Bulldogs tied the game at 7-7 and 9-9 before taking the lead in the eighth when UW freshman reliever Will Fenton (Kingston/North Kitsap) walked catcher Brad Harper with the bases loaded to send in the winning run. Fenton (0-1) suffered the loss, though both of the runs he allowed were unearned.
The Bulldogs iced the game in the eighth inning. Leading 10-9, first baseman Brian Pierce blasted a three- run homer off the scoreboard in left to account for the final tally.
As they did in Friday's series opener, the Huskies (4-2) jumped on the Bulldogs in the first, posting three runs this time around. Shortstop Tila Reynolds (Renton/Liberty) singled and scored the first run when right fielder Tobey Riday-White's throw back to the infield after a single by Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) went awry. A groundout from Bryan Johnson (Ephrata) and a single off the wall in right from Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) drove in a run each to give the UW a 3-0 edge.
The Huskies tacked on three more in the second when Johnson's double down the left-field line with the bases loaded drove in all three runners.
Fresno State got back in the game quickly in the bottom of the second. Riday-White doubled and eventually scored on a Jared Walker single before Harper belted a three-run homer over the center field wall to cut the Husky lead to 6-4. The Bulldogs drew within a run in the third when Scott Beshears doubled and scored on a Casey McGehee single.
After the Huskies scored one in the top of the fourth, the Bulldogs went ahead with three runs in the fourth. Starting pitcher Ben Fritz, who had allowed six runs before being relieved in the third but had stayed in as the designated hitter, lined a bases-loaded double to drive in two runs and tie it at 7-7 before UW starter Clay Johnson (Elma) uncorked a wild pitch to allow Beshears to score the go-ahead run.
A sixth-inning two-run homer from Husky right fielder Davidson, his third, gave Washington a 9-8 lead before FSU tied it in the bottom of the sixth on a throwing error by Garthwaite.
Fresno reliever Zach Minor (1-1) picked up the win, throwing three scoreless innings to close the game.
Washington and Fresno State (5-7) close out the three-game series Sunday with a 1:05 p.m. game.
