Coach June Daugherty
General Remarks:
"This was a good victory tonight and the 3,000 fans in the stands was exciting. I loved the big crowd and packed house. I am very happy for Loree and scoring 1,000 points tonight. I was surprised that she scored her 1,000th point off a free throw I would have thought she would have made it off a three pointer, knowing Payne. Our big girls down low ran the floor very well tonight. And the starters tonight are the ones we are going to go with in order to try to solve our rebounding problems."
On Kayla Burt:
"Give Kayla a lot of credit for her hard work. She spent a lot of time watching the game but Kayla has a high basketball IQ, she knows the game. This was a break out game for her tonight, she was aggressive and taking her shot. Burt's a shooter and she was in the flow of the game tonight. Burt's aggressiveness showed tonight and she had a great feel for the game. Kayla has battled back both mentally and physically to get where she is now, she is deceptively quick."
UW Player Quotes
Kayla Burt
"I worked really hard to get strong to be able to play tonight on our home floor. I was fired up and ready to play. I hadn't played at home in awhile and I came out pumped up and ready to go. I am excited to be back on the court and it's feel good to drive to hoop and know my foot is all right. It was nice to come off screens and take it strong to the hoop."
Sarah Keeler
"UCLA was taking long shots and it led to long rebounds which was a concern at half time. We weren't boxing and it allowed them to get there own rebounds, so we came out second half and made it a point to box out strong. Rebounding has been a concern of ours and we are improving but we still need to continue to work hard. We also need to be more consistent and make rebounding a point of emphasis before it gets to late in the late."
Loree Payne
"Everyone came out on fire tonight, especially Kayla so we kept feeding her the ball. When you have a player on fire like she was you want to make sure she keeps getting the ball. Kayla played an unbelievable game tonight. My shot started to fall in the second half where I felt I was open more often. It's tough to warm up but it something we all are working on. I didn't even know I had scored my 1,000th point until I came off the floor after shooting the free throw and coach told me. "
UCLA Head Coach Kathy Olivier
On cold shooting: "Early on I thought we had some clean looks and early on I thought we did a good job of going to the boards and getting second and third shots. But when things aren't falling we are the kind of team that gets down and we can't afford to do that, especially against a team like Washington. As the game went on Washington got more and more comfortable and they started hitting their threes."
On rebounding: "I actually noticed on their stats that they were struggling with their rebounding but that's actually been our Achilles heel as well so I thought 'hey, this will be great, the battle of the rebounders.' But they started getting after it at the end and they were really crashing the boards."
On Kristee Porter leaving to play pro volleyball: "We knew the opportunity was there for her and it was something she always wanted to do. When she heard they were getting ready to start up the league she realized 'I've got to do it and make some money. She came into UCLA as a volleyball player so she's gotta do it."
