Kohn Tosses Two-Hit Shutout Over UHH

HILO, Hawaii - Junior starter Shawn Kohn threw a two-hit shutout and designated hitter Ben Miller went 5-for-5 as the Washington baseball team cruised to a 9-0 win over Hawaii-Hilo Friday night in a non-conference game at Wong Stadium. The game was called after eight innings due to rain.
Kohn, a right-hander from Woodinville, didn't allow a ball out of the infield until Mike Hobbs led off the sixth with a ground-ball single through the middle. Hobbs was then picked off of first base. Kohn (3-0) was making only his second career start after 39 relief appearances. Last week against Cal, he allowed only one run (unearned) over six innings in his first starting appearance.
Friday vs. Hilo, Kohn allowed only two singles, one of them an infield hit. He fanned eight batters, walked three and hit a batter while facing only four more than the minimum. He allowed only two balls out of the infield all game and didn't allow a runner to reach third base.
The Huskies, in the midst of six straight non-conference games, improved to 16-10 on the season while the Vulcans, members of the Western Athletic Conference, dropped to 4-24.
Washington scored its first runs in the second inning. After back-to-back singles by Bryan Johnson and Michael Done, freshman John Otness belted a double to right field to drive in two runs. Otness made it 3-0 when he scored on a single from Miller.
The Huskies tacked on three more in the fourth. Otness walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single from fellow freshman Ben Johnon. Junior center fielder Andre Marshall, a transfer from Walla Walla CC, followed with his first career home run to give the Huskies a 6-0 lead.
Miller, a junior from Spokane, had three singles, a double, a triple an RBI and a run in his 5-for-5 outing. Both Done and Johnson had three hits on the night as the Huskies had at least one base hit in every inning.
Hilo starter Anthony Bernal (0-6) worked four and one-third innings in the loss, allowing six runs on 11 hits while striking out five. Reliever Darin Miyake allowed only one earned run over three and two-thirds
The Huskies and Vulcans play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon, Hawaii time (3 p.m. Pacific).
