WASHINGTON COACH BOB BENDER
General Remarks:
"I don't want to sound like a broken record but obviously we weren't able to match some things tonight. We knew it would be a challenge to take away their athleticism and we didn't do that tonight and you can see the results, it is kind of like a highlight tape. We wanted to change up some things that they hadn't seen so we went to a 2-3 zone that worked pretty well until we gave up the lob and a couple of threes. We did a better job of taking out their high-low play."
On UW junior center Marlon Shelton's second-half injury:
"We won't know until tomorrow whether he tore his ACL. The early thought is that it is his ACL, he did not break his leg. With the doctors moving his leg around their biggest concern is with his ACL. I have never seen a guy fall as badly as that in my entire college career. He could not cushion anything. You go through a whole year without an injury and it's a shame now that Marlon is hurt. I think he just lost his balance and when he came down his leg was twisted behind his other one. I thought he snapped his leg."
On UW junior center David Dixon:
"David got scratched in the eye and his vision blurred up again as soon as he got back to the bench."
On injuries:
"Well, there was a part of me that was worried about other people getting hurt. After David went out, you worry about kids playing fatigued. Bad luck happens in bunches, and I'm not a pessimist, but that is in the back of your mind, so I'm glad nothing else happened."
On UW sophomore forward Ben Coffee:
"We didn't get Ben in the rotation in the first half and we wanted to get him out there in the second. I thought he did a nice job of doing some simple things. He was rebounding and had a nice flow going. He earned those minutes tonight and I'm sure he will play on Saturday."
On USC's Sam Clancy:
"We wanted to go to a 2-3 to slow that down, but the one thing about Clancy is that he has become such an instinctive player. There are very few people that can match him physically. Where a lot of guys have to adjust to the defense, I don't think Clancy adjusts anything, he is just efficient."
NOTE: USC Coach Henry Bibby and the Trojan players were unavailable for comment following the game.
