STANFORD, Calif. - No. 1-ranked Stanford completed a three-game sweep of the Washington baseball team Sunday at Sunken Diamond, handing the Huskies a 13-4 loss. Stanford took game one of the series, 9-3, and won on Saturday, 9-0.
The Cardinal (21-5 overall, 3-0 in the Pac-10) improved to 13-1 at home this season. Stanford has won 19 of its last 21 games since starting the year 2-3. Over its last 13 games, Stanford has allowed only 24 runs. Washington fell to 13-7 overall and 2-4 in the Pac-10, but the Huskies are done playing USC and Stanford, the top two teams in the conference according to the preseason league predictions.
The game took an early turn when, with no score going to the bottom of the second, Husky sophomore starter Sean White felt pain in his right shoulder during his warmup throws and had to leave the game. Senior Jeff Carlsen (0-1) replaced White, but quickly surrendered two runs. After loading the bases on a double, a single and a walk, Carlsen got a double play that scored one run, but a second came across when Chris O'Riordan singled to right, scoring Sam Fuld.
Scott Dragicevich's two-run single was the highlight of Stanford's four-run third inning as Carlsen was chased from the game. The Cardinal would tack on five more in the fourth to take an 11-0 lead before the Huskies could get on the board. Carlos Quentin's two-run homer in the eighth closed out the scoring for the Cardinal.
The UW broke a string of 14 straight scoreless innings, scoring two in the sixth. Ben Miller doubled to score Chad Yarbrough and then scored two batters later on a double play groundout. In the sixth, the Huskies scored twice more. With runners at second and third and one out, Stanford reliever Mike Gosling balked to send Jefferson Thiel home and then threw a wild pitch to allow John Otness to score.
Miller finished the day with two doubles, going 3-for-5. Washington had the leadoff batter aboard in each of the first eight innings, but left 11 men on base, including nine in scoring position.
Stanford starter Tim Cunningham didn't last long enough (four and two-thirds) to get the win, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks. Mike Gosling (1-0) fanned six in three and one-third frames for the victory in relief.
The Huskies return to Seattle for their next five games. Tuesday night, the Huskies play host to Puget Sound before California comes to Husky Ballpark for a three-game conference series next Friday through Sunday. The following Tuesday, April 3, Pacific Lutheran closes out the homestand with a 6:30 game. All five of those games, except this Tuesday's vs. UPS, will air live on KSRB AM-1150.
