TEMPE, Ariz. - Tommy Smith tied the Pac-10 accuracy record, making 11-of-11 shots, and scored a career-high 24 points as Arizona State routed Washington 89-57 Saturday night.
Alton Mason had 14 of his 20 points in the second half, helping the Sun Devils avoid a repeat of their debacle on Thursday. They blew a 17-point lead in a 58-57 loss to Washington State in their previous game.
Smith, a sophomore, tied the record of UCLA's Marques Johnson, who made 11 field goals without a miss against California on Feb. 27, 1976. Oregon State's Steve Johnson was 13-of-13 against Hawaii-Hilo on Dec. 5, 1979 - the record for a Pac-10 player in a non-conference game.
Smith, who also had seven rebounds, had 10 field goals 7:04 into the second half, then went to the bench at the 9:32 mark when he picked up his fourth foul. About five minutes later, he re-entered the game.
He passed up one shot with an assist to Donnell Knight, but got the record with a one-handed dunk off a missed shot by Kyle Dodd with 1:33 left.
Chad Prewitt had 13 points and Knight 11 for the Sun Devils (11-11, 3-8), who got their first conference home win.
Curtis Allen and Michael Johnson scored 14 apiece for Washington (9-14, 3-8). The Huskies (9-14, 3-8), who lost to Arizona by 20 points on Thursday, were swept in Arizona for the 11th time in the last 13 years.
Arizona State opened a 45-31 halftime lead, and built that to 75-49 with 6:57 to play as Mason got free for layups after breaking Washington's press.
Washington went 6:48 without a field goal early in the first half, and Smith had 10 points during a 19-2 run that sent the Sun Devils to a 25-9 lead with 9:32 to go.
Smith made two free throws with 7:00 left, and Awvee Storey made a layin 20 seconds later, opening a 33-14 lead.
But Allen, scoreless until then, had 10 points in the last 6:25 as the Huskies cut the deficit to 14 points by halftime.
