SEATTLE - Despite trailing by four runs on two different occasions, the Washington baseball rallied, scoring runs in each of the last five innings to beat Portland, 10-7, Wednesday in a non-conference game at Husky Ballpark.
With the victory, the Huskies improved to 25-23 on the season while Portland fell to 22-26. Washington has won 11 of its last 14 games and seven in a row at home.
The Dawgs tied the game at 7-7 with three runs in the seventh inning before posting three in the eighth to pull ahead. In the eighth, Marc Rittenhouse reached on an error by Pilots shortstop Cory Lunde to lead off. After a sacrifice moved him to second, Ed Erickson singled up the middle to give the Huskies their first lead since the second inning.
Lefty Matt Gardner (3-3) picked up the win. He worked four and one-third innings in relief of starter Sean White, allowing two runs on three hits and no walks while striking out six. Freshman Cam McCoy pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save. Reliever Brendan Wood (1-3) took the loss.
Five Huskies had multiple hits in the game, led by left fielder Todd Linden, who was 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Freshman Tyler Davidson went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two driven in and Erickson went 2-for-5 with a double.
Catcher Gavin Hare led the Pilots with three hits, all singles, in four at bats. Shortstop Cory Lunde, who belted a two-run homer in the sixth to give his team a 7-3 lead, was 2-for-5 with four runs batted in. Michael Stewart and Tim Friedman each had two singles for Portland.
Tomorrow, the Huskies make their first-ever trip to Tempe to face 4th-ranked Arizona State. Friday and Saturday's games begin at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday's finale begins at 1:00 p.m. All three games will air live in the Seattle area on KKOL AM-1300.
