CORVALLIS, Ore. - After giving up three runs in the first inning, Oregon State pitcher Thad Johnson held the Washington baseball team scoreless the rest of the way as the Beavers came back to beat the Huskies, 6-3, in a Pac-10 Conference game Friday at Goss Stadium.
Johnson (5-3) allowed only five hits in a complete-game outing, fanning six and walking three. Husky junior Jeff Carlsen (5-2) suffered only the sixth loss of his career (21-6), as he surrendered nine hits -- eight for extra bases -- and four earned runs over seven and one- third innings. OSU improved to 25-19 overall and 6-7 in the Pac-10. UW fell to 19-22, 3-10.
In the first, Marc Rittenhouse led off with a walk and Ed Erickson was hit by a pitch to put runners two runners on. Todd Linden's double down the left field line scored both of them and Linden, who moved to third on a throw home, scoring a groundout by Jay Garthwaite to give the UW a 3-0 lead.
The Beavers chipped away and eventually pulled even. Eric Stark tripled and scored on a groundout in the third. In the fifth, Drew Hedges doubled and scored on a Will Hudson double. Then in the fifth, third baseman Brian Barden led off with his fifth home run of the season to tie it a 3-3.
Oregon State took the lead in the seventh. With runners at first and second, Hudson laid down a bunt. Carlsen's throw to first sailed wide and allowed Stark to score from second base. Later in the inning, Andy Jarvis' sacrifice fly scored Hudson and OSU had a 5-3 lead.
Second baseman Zach Gordon closed out the Beaver scoring with a solo home run in the eighth that knocked Carlsen out of the game.
Linden was the only Husky with more than one hit in the game, as he finished 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, a stolen base and two runs batted in.
The Huskies and Beavers continue the three-game series Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and close it out with another 1:00 p.m. start on Sunday.
