No. 1 Washington Wins NFCA Leadoff Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Redshirt freshman Jenny Topping homered in the bottom of the second inning and senior Jennifer Spediacci struck out 10 and allowed just one hit to lead No. 1 Washington to a 1-0 win over eighth-ranked Fresno State in the NFCA Leadoff Classic championship game on Sunday. The Huskies had advanced to the final with a 3-0 win over No. 5 Louisiana State and won their second Leadoff Classic title, adding to its 1996 trophy.
Topping's home run was her 13th of the season and the team's 39th of the year, both tying school records. She was named the tournament's most valuable player, while Graves and junior Kelly Hauxhurst earned a spot on the all-tournament team. The Huskies improve to 24-1 and will have next weekend off before competing in the Kia Klassic in Fullerton, Calif., Mar. 16-19.
In the LSU matchup, the third of the season, freshman Jaime Clark doubled in Hauxhurst and junior Kim DePaul, who had singled in the third inning. One more run came in the sixth when Graves singled, was sacrificed to second by junior Christie Rosenblad, moved to third on a center field fly by sophomore Shannon Walsh, and came home on a single by senior Rosie Leutzinger. Graves struck out five in the win.
