LOS ANGELES - UCLA hit five home runs Monday at Jackie Robinson Stadium to hand the Washington baseball team a 12-5 loss and earn a 2-1 series win in the opening weekend of Pac-10 play for both teams.
Washington fell to 1-2 in the Pac-10 and 8-13 overall with the loss. UCLA improved to 2- 1, 16-11. Husky starter Jeff Carlsen (3-1) suffered his first loss of the year, allowing five earned runs over three and two-thirds innings. UCLA's Bobby Roe (4-2) gave up three earned runs over seven innings to earn the victory.
Senior first baseman Ed Erickson had a double and a solo home run in four at bats to lead the Husky offense. Freshman shortstop Tila Reynolds was 2-for-3 with an RBI, a stolen base and a run.
Washington took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Reynolds' single drove home Todd Linden. But UCLA went in front in the bottom of the second as Charles Merricks and Josh Canales each posted RBI singles. In the third, UCLA's Bill Scott, Nick Lyon and Jim Hemming each hit solo home runs to give the Bruins a 5-1 edge.
UCLA got its fourth home run, a two-run blast to center field, in the fourth inning off the bat of first baseman Garrett Atkins. The fifth Bruin round-tripper was a solo shot from catcher Forrest Johnson, leading off the fifth inning against reliever Taylor Grant.
Lyon, a sophomore from Monroe, finished the day 3-for-4 to lead the Bruins' attack.
The Huskies return to Seattle for their next four games. Wednesday at 6:30, the Dawgs take on Portland. Friday through Sunday, California comes to Husky Ballpark for a three- game Pac-10 series.
