
Rittenhouse Powers UW Past T-Birds

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Junior Marc Rittenhouse hit two home runs, including a tie-breaking grand slam in the sixth inning, to lead the Washington baseball team to a 16-11 win over Southern Utah Wednesday at Bruce Hurst Field.
Rittenhouse, the Husky center fielder from Bellevue's Newport High, led off the game with a solo home run to left. Later, his grand slam to center field broke a 7-7 tie. The 5- foot-10 leadoff hitter now leads the Huskies with five home runs this season.
Washington, which had trailed 6-1 after three innings, improved to 7-10 with the victory while the Thunderbirds fell to 8-10. UW junior starter Jeff Carlsen (3-0) worked five and two-thirds innings for the victory. SUU's Brian Mounce, from Kennewick, Wash., suffered the loss to fall to 0-3.
Rittenhouse, who also had an RBI double in the seventh, finished the day 3-for-5 with six RBI. Freshman catcher Jefferson Thiel (Kirkland/Juanita HS) had a single, a double and four RBI while Tila Reynolds, Ed Erickson, Jay Garthwaite, Matt Hollod and Josh Fulton eached had two hits.
Curtis Jacobsen had four hits and thre RBI and Jarod Ingersol hit a two-run homer to lead SUU.
The two teams will close out the three-game series Thursday at 2:00 p.m. MST at Thunderbird Park in Cedar City, Utah.
