FULLERTON, Calif. - Kim DePaul homered twice and Erin Helgeland and Jenny Topping each hit two shots propel the No. 1 Huskies to a 9-0, run-rule win over No. 11 Cal State Fullerton after suffering their second loss of the season to Northwestern, 4-1. Washington, now 33-2, will play a doubleheader at San Diego State tomorrow at 1 p.m.
The Dawgs retaliated against the Titans with a nine-hit outing after being outhit for just the fourth time of the season against the Wildcats. After three scoreless innings in the nightcap, freshman Jaime Clark led off the fourth with a single and was sacrificed to second by senior Melissa Downs. Senior Jennifer Spediacci then walked before Helgeland's sixth homer just cleared the left field fence.
Two consecutive single-shot four-baggers came in the fifth frame by DePaul and Topping, and the Huskies scored another four in the sixth to end the game early. Spediacci singled and moved to second on a Graves sacrifice. Helgeland singled and junior Kelly Hauxhurst's hit drove Spediacci in, and an ensuing error brought Helgeland home. DePaul then smashed her second homer of the day to end the scoring.
Spediacci pitched a one-hitter and struck out seven through five innings to improve to 17-1 on the season before sophomore Shannon Walsh relieved her in the sixth.
Northwestern pushed a run across in the second inning off a hit and an error to begin the scoring. The Huskies finally answered in the sixth when senior Rosie Leutzinger and Hauxhurst singled, DePaul walked and a sacrifice fly by Topping brought Leutzinger home.
But the Wildcats scored three in the bottom of the sixth off two hits and an error to finish the upset. Graves (16-1) struck out six in her first loss of the season.
