SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team broke its four-game losing streak while extending Dayton's to 11 games as the Huskies downed the Flyers 6-1 Friday night at Husky Ballpark.
The Huskies improved to 4-9 on the year while Dayton, which won its first three games of the season, fell to 3-11.
Husky starter Jeff Carlsen improved to 2-0 with the victory. The 6-foot-7 righty worked eight innings, allowing one run on five hits while fanning eight. UD starter Jason McFarland (0-4) worked a complete game in the loss, striking out nine.
Going against eighth-year head coach Ken Knutson's usual philosophy, the Huskies used baserunning and bunting to beat the Flyers. Washington stole seven bases in the game -- including three by right fielder Matt Hollod -- and laid down three sacrifice bunts, including a suicide squeeze in the seventh. Last season, the Huskies had nine sacrifices all year.
Hollod went 2-for-4 with two runs while junior Todd Linden went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs batted in.
Shortstop Nate Winkelfoos led the Flyers with three hits, a run and two stolen bases. Aaron Reesh drove in the lone UD run with one of his two hits.
The Huskies and Flyers continue the three-game series Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
