ST. GEORGE, Utah - The No. 1 ranked Huskies used 22 hits to outscore their opponents, 20-3, on the first day of the Red Desert Classic, downing Brigham Young, 8-2, and No. 25 Oklahoma State, 12-1, on Friday. Washington improves to 15-1 on the season and will face Southern Utah and Utah tomorrow at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
Washington got three more home runs on the season, by senior Jaime Clark and redshirt freshman Jenny Topping in the second. Topping's blast was a grand slam, UW's second in as many weekends, and she and Clark lead the team with six each this season. The Huskies have 21 four-baggers on the year, five off last year's total mark and 18 off the program record.
Brigham Young, in its first season of varsity softball, allowed the Huskies three runs in the first four innings before UW pushed five more across in the last three frames. The Dawgs got on the board in the second inning with a single by freshman Jamie Clark, a sacrifice bunt by senior Jamie Graves, a single by junior Christie Rosenblad and a sacrifice fly by senior Erin Helgelnd. In the third inning, junior Kim DePaul was hit by a pitch and Topping walked before a double by Clark to left field scored DePaul. Helgeland homered in the fourth inning made it 3-0.
Junior Kelly Hauxhurst and DePaul singled in the fifth inning off three singles, but the Huskies answered with two more of their own in the top of the seventh with two outs for the final count. Seniors Jeanine Giordano and Rosie Leutzinger singled before walks by Hauxhurst, DePaul, and Topping sent pinch runner Becky Simpson and Leutzinger home. Graves improved to 9-0 this season.
Washington fell behind against No. 25 Oklahoma State when Kirsty Jennings hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning. But the Huskies allowed no more Cowgirls to score while putting 12 runs on the board themselves in the next three frames.
Walks by Leutzinger, DePaul and Topping loaded the bases before a long single by Clark and another by senior Melissa Downs made it 3-0. In the fourth, Helgeland singled, and with two outs DePaul walked and Topping doubled to send Helgeland and DePaul home. Clark then sent a two-run blast over the left field fence to give the Huskies a 7-1 lead.
The offense continued in the fifth inning. Senior Jennifer Spediacci and Rosenblad led off with singles and Leutzinger doubled to score Rosenblad after pinch runner Jessica Bork was thrown out at third. Hauxhurst then doubled and DePaul walked to load the bases for Topping's shot over the center field fence, which ended the game. Spediacci picked up her sixth win in seven decisions while striking out nine.
