Baseball Splits Pair Of One-Run Games

PHOENIX - The Washington baseball team split a pair of one-run games Sunday, rallying to beat Northern Iowa 5-4 before falling to Northwestern, 2-1, in the final day of the Rawlings Spring Training Invitational.
Washington dropped to 1-4 with the split. UNI fell to 1-3 while Northwestern improved to 2-2.
After being held to only one hit through the first five innings of game one, the Huskies finally got to UNI starter Matt Cobb (0-1) in the sixth, scoring five runs to take the lead. Marc Rittenhouse drove in the first two with a double before eventually scoring on a Matt Hollod groundout. Later in the inning with two outs, JC transfer first baseman Duggan Moran drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with his first college hit, a single to center field, capping the rally.
Sophomore lefty Taylor Grant (1-0) faced the minimum over three and one-third innings for the win. The Newport High product didn't allow a hit, run or walk while fanning five.
In game two, the Dawgs were shut down by Northwestern starter Gabe Ribas (1-0), who held the Huskies to only two hits over the seven-inning complete game. UW junior Matt Gardner allowed two runs on three hits over four innings for the loss.
The Huskies lone run came inthe fifth when Marc Rittenhouse scored on a Michael Done single. Sophomore Todd Linden went 3-for-5 over the two games to improve to 12-for-16 (.750) for the weekend. The Bremerton, Wash., product hit two doubles, a triple and three home runs while driving in 11 over the five-game tournament.
The Huskies next play on Friday, when they open the home schedule against Gonzaga. Game one of the four-game series is Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Husky Ballpark. A noon doubleheader next Saturday and a 1:00 p.m. game Sunday wrap up the home-opening weekend.
