SEATTLE - Senior Tami Bennett scored the lone goal in the 17th minute Friday to lift the eighth-ranked Washington women's soccer team to its first ever victory over No. 12 Stanford, a 1-0 decision in front of 1,812 spectators at Husky Soccer Field.
The Huskies (10-1, 1-0) recorded their fourth win of the season against a ranked opponent. Defending Pac-10 champion Stanford (7-3-1, 0-1) had won eight and tied two of the previous 10 meetings with Washington. It was the conference-opening game for both teams.
Bennett, who set the school scoring record in the last UW outing, recorded her 29th career goal and team-leading 11th this season. Senior Malia Arrant threw the ball in to Katie Goodeve who served a long cross from the left side that Bennett touched past Stanford goalkeeper Carly Smolak into the right side of the net. The 10-yard goal came at 16:19.
Bennett is one goal away from tying the Washington single-season goals record of 12 established in 1995 by Tara Bilanski. Also a prolific prep scorer, Bennett completed her career at Seattle Christian with a Washington state high school record 152 goals. That mark was surpassed last spring by the 166-goal total of her sister Melissa Bennett who is now a freshman on the UW squad.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hope Solo (Richland HS) was credited with six saves, including four on point-blank Cardinal shots. Smolak had four saves for Stanford which was outshot 18-17.
The Huskies host undefeated and ninth-ranked California (11-0-1, 1-0) on Sunday. Kick-off is noon at Husky Soccer Field.
