PORTLAND, Ore. -- Juniors Tami Bennett and Theresa Wagner each tallied a goal Saturday to lead the Washington women's soccer team to its first win of the 1999 season, a 2-1 victory over San Jose State during the first round of the Adidas Tournament at Portland's Merlo Field.
Bennett opened the scoring 15 minutes into the contest, one-timing a cross from Caroline Putz past Spartan goalkeeper Amee Brown. A product of Seattle Christian High School, Bennett was a first-team All-Pacific-10 Conference selection in 1998 after leading the Huskies with nine goals.
Wagner, a graduate of Seattle's Lakeside High School, scored what proved to be the game-winner at 61:50. She ran on to a pass from Erin Otagaki and booted a low liner from 7 yards away.
Freshman goalkeeper Hope Solo registered six saves for Washington which was outshot 11-6. Solo lost the shutout inside the final two minutes. San Jose State's Jaime Doddridge headed a chip from teammate Julie Brum at 88:07. The ball was tipped by Solo, but still trickled into the goal.
Brown finished with four saves for the Spartans, denying all but two Washington attempts.
The Huskies continue play in the Portland tournament on Sunday, meeting Oklahoma State at noon.
