SPOKANE, Wash. - The Washington men's soccer team, ranked 11th in the NSCAA preseason poll, opened its 1999 season with a 2-2 draw against cross-state foe Gonzaga on Wednesday afternoon despite playing half the game a man down.
Three goals came within seven minutes of each other halfway through the opening stanza. The Bulldogs struck first at 20:28, when Brian Ching netted a goal against UW freshman keeper Chad Olsen off an assist from Matt Blasdel. Gonzaga then knocked a ball into their own goal off a corner kick at 23:14 to even the score. GU scored again at 27:29, when Jason Kuska used a Ching pass to head the ball off the crossbar.
The Huskies' preseason All-American forward, Wes Hart, received a yellow card at 59:55 and was ejected, but his teammates came back to score at 78:05. Freshman Zac Tallman headed in a throw-in from sophomore Bryn Ritchie to knot the game again, but neither team could put the ball past the goalkeeper in the final 42 minutes.
Gonzaga outshot UW 22-15, though the Huskies finished with an 11-6 corner-kick advantage. Olsen notched six saves in his collegiate debut, while GU's Trevor Yost had five. The fouls were even at 31 apiece.
