SEATTLE-Erin Misaki scored the first goal and assisted on the game-winner on Sunday, lifting Portland to a 2-1 victory over Washington in the championship game of the sixth-annual Husky Nike Invitational women's soccer tournament in front of 1,374 spectators at Husky Soccer Field.
Portland (6-4-1) won its third straight Nike Invitational title, matching host Washington's (3-6) record total of three tournament crowns. Washington State (6-4) topped UC Irvine (4-5-2) by a 2-0 score to secure third place.
Misaki broke a scoreless tie five minutes into the second half. Betsy Barr set up the goal, dribbling through a host of Huskies before having her shot blocked by sophomore goalkeeper Leslie Weeks who came 15 yards off the line. Misaki collected the rebound and booted it into the open net at 50:01.
Vanessa Talbott tallied what proved to be the game winner just over two minutes later. She scored on an 18-yard blast at 52:17 off a pass from Misaki.
Washington sophomore Caroline Putz trimmed the deficit to one goal inside the final minute, placing a shot into the Pilot net from 15 yards out on the left side. Freshman Megan McKinstry's pass set up the Putz goal at 89:01.
Cheryl Loveless recorded four saves for the Pilots who were outshot 14-12. Weeks posted two saves after halftime and freshman teammate Hope Solo had one save while blanking Portland in the first half.
In the third-place game, Natalie Kehl assisted on both Washington State goals. She teamed with Christina Pallan to set up the first Cougar tally which was registered by Beth Childs at 64:23.
Katrina Stroh scored the second WSU goal, blasting a 10-yard shot that followed quick passes from Kehl and Liz Duncan.
Washington State's Lindsey Jorgensen was voted the Outstanding Goalkeeper of the tournament. She made four saves en route to the shut out of UC Irvine. The Anteaters, who were outshot 25-6, got seven saves from Sarah Swancutt.
Washington midfielder Theresa Wagner, who scored three goals Friday against UC Irvine, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
