SEATTLE - The Washington men's soccer team improved its postseason possibilities significantly this weekend, shutting out MPSF Mountain Division leader Stanford, 1-0, on Sunday after a 2-1 upset over No. 15 Cal on Friday. UW, at 9-4-2 and 4-0, is the only undefeated squad in the division and a leg up on the Cardinal (9-3-2, 4-1-1), which has only one loss in league play.
The game featured several scoring opportunities for both squads but remained scoreless in the first period. At 52:31, senior midfielder Wes Hart scored his second goal of the weekend, knocking in the rebound off a cross by junior Mark Hogenhout, which senior Morgan McCoy chested to Hart.
Rather than take the defensive, Washington took six more shots in the game's duration and managed to thwart a steady attack by the Cardinal offense. The Huskies outshot SU, 13-11, and held a 9-6 corner-kick advantage. Goalkeepers James Dickinson of UW and Adam Zapala of Stanford each made four saves.
"It was very difficult to get into a rhythm because of Stanford's style of play," UW coach Dean Wurzberger said. "We played their game most of the first half before we finally settled down and let our skill and passing be effective. It was an ugly game but we hung tough for the win."
Washington has three conference matches remaining-at Cal Poly SLO Oct. 29 before hosting Sacramento State on Halloween Day and Oregon State on Nov. 7. Should UW win the Mountain Division, it would host the MPSF championship game on Wednesday, Nov. 10.
