- Title:
- Volunteer Assistant Coach
Duane Storti is a former volunteer assistant coach for the Husky volleyball program.
Storti's primary coaching duties include analysis of opposing offensive schemes and coordination of blocking.
Storti is a 1979 graduate of Cornell University, where he majored in engineering and applied physics, was captain of the men's volleyball team, and lived just up the hill from Carl Sagan.
He remained at Cornell for graduate study in theoretical and applied mechanics, served as volunteer assistant coach for both the men's and women's volleyball teams, and continued to play competitively with the Upstate Volleyball Club, as a member of the Central New York team in the Empire State Games, and on beaches ranging from Rochester, N.Y., to Virginia Beach (and beyond).
After submitting his PhD thesis, entitled "Coupled Relaxation Oscillators: Stability of Phase-Locked Modes," Storti came to Washington in 1983 to join the faculty in mechanical engineering. He began serving as a volunteer assistant volleyball coach under Debbie Buse in 1988.
With the exception of a sabbatical leave at the University of Michigan in 1993-94 (a year during which the Michigan men's club improved from tied for last to elite eight in the NIRSA national championships), Storti served continuously as a faculty member in mechanical engineering (while adding an adjunct appointment in applied mathematics) and volunteer assistant coach.
He holds three patents, has authored over 40 technical papers on a range of topics including nonlinear dynamics, perturbation theory, computer-aided design, rapid prototyping and volleyball (including the acclaimed "Impact Dynamics of the Pancake").
Storti has served as president of the UW chapter of the American Association of University Professors and the Faculty Senate, and continues as an advocate of high quality education and fair treatment for faculty.
