Richard Reece has been a long-serving member of UW soccer, joining in 2005 and recently completing his 20th season on the Husky sideline. Reece has helped UW to threeย Pac-12 titlesย and 14 trips to the NCAA Tournament. Of those postseason appearances, the Huskies have madeย four trips to the NCAA Quarterfinals, includingย three straightย NCAA Quarterfinals appearancesย from 2019-21 and the 2021 National Final.
Most recently, Reece coached Jadon Bowton to a break out season leading the team to the Big Tenย semifinal as well as the NCAA playoffs on the back of two Big Tenย Goalkeeper of the Weekย awards and the United Soccer Coachesย All-Region team. Bowtonย stepped in to replace the recently graduated Sam Fowler who went on to claim the third-best career goals against average in program history (0.73), the fourth-most shutouts in program history (25), and the backstopper ofย the team that went to the NCAAย final.
Reece has developed six Husky keepers that have played in the MLS: Chris Eylander, Spencer Richey and Jacob Castro with the Seattle Sounders, Ryan Herman, a first-round MLS Draft pick to FC Dallas, Auden Schilder drafted to San Jose Earthquakes, and Rylan Hawkins with New England Revolution.
Under the tutelage of Reece, the above keepers have all etched their names into the Washington history books by receiving conference and regional honors, along with Ryan Herman being named an All-American.
Alongside the goalkeepers, Reece works closely with the team's defending unit which has seen Mike Chabala, Ty Harden, George John, Justin Schmidt, Taylor Peay, Freddy Kleeman, Kendall Burks, Charlie Ostrem, Ryan Sailor, and Ethan Bartlow drafted and play in the MLS. In addition, he has helped coach all four of Washington's ย Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year recipients:ย Spencer Richey (2012), Ethan Bartlow (2019), Charlie Ostrem (2020), and Ryan Sailor (2021).
Reece holds the prestigious UEFA "A" license along with the USSF "A" coaching license, a USSF National Goalkeeping License, a USSF Youth license, a NSCAA Premier Diploma and Director of Coaching License.
In addition to his duties with the Washington menโs soccer program, Reece is a Director at Seattle United where he has guided many players to college soccer and youth national teams for multiple countries. He has also worked with US youth national teams on both the menโs and women's programs.ย
Reece and his wife Brooke reside in Woodinville, Wash. with their daughters Jazzy and Charlie.
