After competing in our first intrasquad on Sunday, I can't stop thinking about how much potential and talent our team has. Both the coaches and gymnasts are so determined this year to show what we've really got, mentally and physically. Most importantly, we all found out what needs work and improvement so that we'll be ready for the real thing in January at UCLA.
Having experienced a meet as a Husky for the first time, I was amazed at the energy level the entire team had. I got lost in all the high-fives and cheers, and even though we competed against each other, none of us could help cheering for the other side.
With the score being so close throughout the first three events, intensity levels were rising but when it came down to the last rotation, purple won it with Kelly Gilbert's 9.8 floor routine. All I can say is that it definitely raised some eyebrows!
Some other highlights that night were Natalie's powerful vault, Raimey's beautiful bar routine, and Ashley's gorgeous beam routine. In addition, us freshies got some valuable experience competing in a college atmosphere. Celia Short impressed us all with her difficulty on bars, while Cassidy got to perform for the first time on beam after her ACL surgery. Although these are just a few, everybody did a great job in competing in the intrasquad.
Even with finals coming up next week, the gym has become a place of freedom where the stresses of academics are gone. After Sunday, we all can't wait to get back into the gym and work hard on our consistency and problem areas. With so much support from our coaches and teammates, we can only get better throughout the year.
Not only that, but Christmas is just around the corner - and we can all look forward to a delicious holiday meal cooked by the gold team!
