Gregg Swenson, former head coach at Tacoma Community College, joined the Washington staff as an assistant coach prior to the 2001 season. He also serves as director of Washington Baseball Camps.
Swenson serves as the Huskies' first base coach during games and oversees the outfielders. As camp director, he oversees and administrates summer and winter camps. In three seasons as a Husky assistant, Swenson has had five outfielders named first team All-Pac-10. Last year, he added two more All-Pac-10 first-teamers to the list as Zach Clem and Brent Lillibridge both made the team.
Following the 2003 season, outfielders Chad Boudon and Lillibridge were named to the All-Pac-10 first team. Additionally, outfielder Mike Wagner belted 15 homers and was drafted in the fifth round following the season. In his first season in 2002, he helped coach All-Pac-10 pick Tyler Davidson. In addition, Jay Gartwaite was named an honorable mention All-Pac-10 performer. Both were drafted following the season.
In 1996, Swenson returned to Tacoma CC, where he played in 19990 and 1991, as the pitching coach. Swenson spent six seasons, five as the head coach, at TCC. He was named Coach of the Year in the NWAACC Western Division in both 1997 and 2000. In his first year as a head coach at Tacoma in 1997, he guided the Titans to the NWAACC tournament for the first time since 1988. His 2000 squad set a school record for wins and finished third in the NWAACC tournament. His teams finished third in the NWAACC the last two seasons and he finished his five-year TCC career with a won-lost record of 124-76.
Swenson began his high school coaching career as the pitching coach at Sehome High School in Bellingham. The 1992 Sehome club finished second in the state playoffs, while the 1993 and 1995 teams earned 5th place finishes. While in Bellingham, he coached the 1993 Bellingham Post 7 American Legion team to a 2nd place finish in the state American Legion tournament. In 1994, he guided the White Rock (B.C.) Tritons to the Washington Palomino Baseball state championship.
Swenson has taught for the past seven years in the Tacoma School District. He currently teaches physical education at Jason Lee Middle School in Tacoma.
Swenson attended Olympia High School and Tacoma CC before earning a degree in physical education/exercise science and physiology/sports psychology from Western Washington University in 1994. In 1997, he earned his masters in teaching degree from City University.
Swenson and his wife, Diane, a UW grad, reside in Puyallup. They are the parents of a baby daughter named Megan.
