Joe Weis returns for his sixth season as the Huskies’ volunteer assistant coach.
Weis is Professor of Sociology at the UW and also serves as the Director of UW’s Center for Law and Justice, which conducts research on crime and the criminal justice system. One of the courses he teaches, on the causes and ramifications of murder, is one of the most well-known and popular courses on campus.
He serves as the outfielder coach, a role that has seen him tutor three-time All-Pac-10 outfielder Chris Magruder (1996-98), as well as All-Pac-10 picks Jamie Porter (1997), Nick Stefonick (1998), and Bryan Williamson (1999). Other outstanding outfielders he has coached include Sean Spencer, currently a pitcher high in the Expos organization, Jim Na of the Montreal Expos system, and Cam Cleeland of the NFL New Orleans Saints. Weis also coaches first base during games.
Weis has been involved in coaching baseball at the youth level in the Seattle area for almost twenty years. For the past eight seasons he has coached the Eastside Baseball Club, Cardinal Knights, a select 18-and-under team. In that capacity he has coached several former Huskies, such as current Anaheim Angels prospect Kevin Ticen, former Husky star Ryan Soules, now a member of the New York Yankees’ organization, and Tom Linarelli in the Boston Red Sox system.
Weis attended Redwood High School in Larkspur, Calif., where he played for Hall of Fame coach Al Endriss. He was an All-Marin County Athletic League and All-MCAL Tournament shortstop. He went on to play infield at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from UCSB in 1967, and continued his education at the University of California at Berkeley, where he was awarded a master’s degree (1970) and a doctorate (1974), both in criminology.
Weis and his wife, Karen, reside in Kirkland. They have two children – a daughter Braia and son Brett. Both of them graduated from the UW, where Braia is currently a graduate student in the school of nursing.
