Williams Runs Away With Washington Amateur Title

DuPONT, Wash. -- Chris Williams shot 3-under 68 in the final round of the Washington State Men's Amateur Championship on Friday to end up 13-under par 271 overall and win by 10 strokes over Nick Varelia.
Williams was the only golfer to shoot under 70 four times (67-67-69-68-271) to earn the win at Eagles Pride Golf Course. The All-American had four birdies and just one bogey on Friday at the 7,026-yard, par-71 course outside of Joint Base Lewis-McCord.
Beginning the day with a six-stroke lead, Williams continued his solid play with birdies on the 1st, 4th and 6th holes which offset his lone bogey of the round at the difficult par-4, 465 yard 5th. In true champion form, Williams closed his title run with a birdie at the 621-yard, par-5 18th hole. Williams' collective 16 birdies and one eagle on the week came from a strategy he calls, "Keep it easy, and keep it simple," which he executed to perfection.
Williams is the reigning WSGA Men's Player of the Year and the 2007 WSGA Junior Boys' Player of the Year.
Tyler Salsbury, who will join Williams on the UW team as a freshman in the fall, ended up tied for 23rd at +13 overall.
