Husky Golfers Open Pac-10s in Fourth Place

Pleasanton, CA - The eighth-ranked Washington women's golf team opened Pac-10 Championships play with a 10-over score of 298 to figure fourth on the leaderboard. The 54-hole tournament played at Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton, Calif., concludes Wednesday.
The Huskies are nine strokes behind second-ranked UCLA. The Bruins grabbed the first-round lead by shooting 1-over 289, led by Susie Mathews' 4-under 68. USC, ranked 20th, is second at 291 while fifth-ranked Arizona State is third, one stroke ahead of the Huskies.
Washington was led Monday by 1-over 73s by junior All-American Paige Mackenzie and sophomore Amber Prange. They are tied with four other players for seventh place. Sophomore Courtney McCracken and freshman Kim Shin are tied for 20th at 76. Junior Sung Ea Lee is 39th at 79.
Prange's 73 was her best round at the Pac-10 Championships. Last year she was 14th overall at 17-over 233. Mackenzie was 21st at the 2004 league championships and was 41st as a freshman in 2002.
Last year Washington placed sixth at the Pac-10s before going on to register a sixth-place showing at the NCAAs. The Huskies best finish at the conference championship was a third-place effort in 1988.
