Husky Men's Tennis Team Receives NCAA Bid

Seattle - The Washington men's tennis team will face San Diego State in the opening round of the 2000 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships. The Huskies and Aztecs will meet on Friday, May 13 at at Pepperdine, the host school for the first- and second-round matches. Pepperdine, the third seed in the tournament, will face Tulsa in the other first-round matchup.
This year's appearance marks the sixth consecutive year Washington has been selected for the NCAA Championships. The past three seasons the Huskies have won their first-round match before being eliminated in the second round of play.
Washington goes into the NCAA Championships ranked 30th in the latest Collegiate Tennis Rankings. The Huskies are 15-8 this season. San Diego State (15-7) figures 26th in the poll. The two teams have met 18 times and the Aztecs hold a 10-8 advantage in the series. San Diego State senior Alex Waske, the Mountain West Conference player of the year, is currently ranked 37th in the nation while the Aztec's Oliver Maiberger figures 73rd in the singles standings. Waske teams with Adam Webster to form the 37th-ranked doubles team in the nation. None of Washington's players are ranked in this week's singles poll, but Andy Posavac and Nick Quatrochi are ranked 33rd in doubles.
"They are kind of a wild card," said Husky coach Matt Anger. "They lost some matches early in the year, but then they got their lineup settled and played really well down the stretch. They had a big win streak (nine) before losing in their conference finals. They also have a win over Baylor and that is a team that is ranked seventh this week. It will be a very tough match for us. I know our players are excited about the site and to be playing the tournament at Pepperdine."
