March 10, 1998
Washington's men's tennis team (9-3) moved up 11 notches to the 29th-ranked team in the nation in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association's poll released Tuesday. The Huskies have won three in a row and seven out of their last eight matches. During this span, Washington has defeated six ranked opponents and captured the Great Northwest Shoot Out championship on its home court.
The Huskies are led by freshman Robert Kendrick and junior Eric Drew. Kendrick moved up 16 spots to the 54th-ranked player in the nation with a 19-7 record and a 5-2 No. 2 singles record. Drew is unranked but owns a 13-5 overall record and won six straight matches before recording two "did not finishes" at the H.E.B. Tennis Classic this past weekend. He also owns a 5-0 No. 1 singles mark. Drew and Kendrick also team up to form Washington's No. 1 doubles team. The two hold a 12-4 record, good for a No. 45 ranking in the nation.
The Huskies return to action in two weeks as they travel to Santa Barbara, Calif. to participate in the Gaucho Tennis Classic.
