May 27, 1999
Athens, GA - Washington mens tennis players Eric Drew and Robert Kendrick advanced to the second-round of the NCAA doubles championship held in Athens, Ga. earlier today. In singles, Drew won his second-round singles match as Kendrick was upset in three sets.
The 14th-ranked Husky duo (17-4) won a lengthy three-set battle with 37th-ranked Daniel Andersson and Frank Moser of Virginia Commonwealth. Drew-Kendrick dropped the first set 6-4 but rallied to take the second 6-0. Up 6-5 in the third-set, Andersson-Moser tied it up to force a third-set tie-breaker. Drew-Kendrick prevailed winning the tie-break, 7-5. They face Arizona States 16th-ranked team of Ed Carter and Jeff Williams tomorrow.
In singles play, No. 58 Drew advanced to the third-round upsetting 16th-ranked Johann Jooste of Baylor, 6-2, 6-7, 7-5. Drews record improves to 21-7. By virtue of his advancement to the round of 16, Drew becomes an All-American for the first time. Kendrick joins Drew as an All-American as his high ranking and seeding in both singles and doubles championship draws qualify him for the honor. They are Washingtons first All-Americas, and fourth overall, since Chet Crile earned the honor in 1993. Dick Knight was the first in 1970.
The 10th-ranked Kendrick was upset by North Carolina States 49th-ranked Roberto Bracone in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. Kendricks season ends with a 31-9 record, good for second-place on Washingtons most singles wins in one season list.
