All Seven UW Boats Through To Finals At San Diego Crew Classic
March 28, 2026 | Women's Rowing
SAN DIEGO – The No. 4-ranked Washington women's rowing team saw all seven of its crews earn spots in grand finals, on day one of the San Diego Crew Classic, Saturday morning on Mission Bay. Those seven will all race for trophies on Sunday.
Washington brought seven crews to the annual event – four eight-oared crews and three fours. The first and second varsity eights both rowed in heats (where only the top finishers moved on to finals) while the others all competed in preliminary races, with all crews through to the final. Two of the five events in which the Huskies competed included two Washington entries.
In the Huskies' first race of the day, a heat in the varsity eight Jessop-Whittier Cup, the Huskies and old rival California raced out well ahead of the other three crews, with the UW eight in front throughout.
In the final portion of the race, Cal gave the Huskies a test, but Washington hung on to win by about three seats. The UW time was 6:35.693, a little over a second ahead of the Golden Bears' 6:36.847. Third-place Sacramento State was another 30 seconds back.
The Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup, for varsity fours, featured eight crews in a preliminary race, with all eight advancing to Sunday's final.
The lead was shared throughout by UW and Texas, but the Longhorns moved into the front in the third 500 and held on for a win, with a time of 7:40.687. UW was finished comfortably in second, at 7:46.393, about six seconds in front of third-place Cal.
The Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy heat, for second varsity eights, featured another four-boat field. It was another two-boat race, however, as Washington and California quickly moved well in front.
Washington led from wire-to-wire and won with a time of 7:00.751, and crossed with a bit of open water ahead of California (7:04.622).
The College B 4+ race was another preliminary race, with all eight entries going through to the final. Washington entered both its second and third varsity fours in the race, as it did last year, when UW finished in the top-two places in the event.
In Saturday's prelim, UW's two crews quickly moved to the front off the pack, with a four from California in between. Those three raced the entire course in those positions, and Washington's second varsity four won the race in 8:02.062. Cal was second (8:07.984) and UW's 3V4+ was third, in 8:15.483.
In the day's final race, Washington's third and four varsity eights raced in a six-boat field in the preliminary of the Carley Copley Open 8+. Texas won that prelim, in 7:15.612, with California (7:24.513) second. Washington's third varsity eight (7:27.521) and fourth varsity eight (7:30.549) took third and fourth, well ahead of UCLA and UCSD.
On Sunday, Washington will vie for trophies in all five of its race categories. The first women's collegiate grand final of the day, the varsity eight Jessop-Whitter Cup, begins at 9:23 a.m. PT.
