Huskies Hand No. 18 Illinois First Loss, 2-1 On Montlake
September 21, 2025 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – The Washington women's soccer team scored in both halves of Sunday afternoon's matchup with No. 18 Illinois, handing the previously unbeaten Fighting Illini their first loss of the season, 2-1 at Husky Soccer Stadium.
Jadyn Holdenried provided the second half winner, scoring her fifth goal of the season to extend her team lead.
The Huskies forced the attack all match long, firing off 17 shots, their second highest total of the season, while holding the Illini offense to just seven attempts.
Washington jumped on the offensive right from the opening whistle and in the 12th minute, the pressure paid off, forcing an Illinois own goal to open scoring after Samiah Shell's lobbed cross was turned into the goal by an Illini defender on a failed clearance.
The Huskies continued to press and create dangerous chances, finishing the first half with nine shots at the Illinois goal, but went into the break with the margin at one.
Shortly after the restart, though, Holdenried doubled the Dawg advantage in the 54th minute. UW's second came from pin-point buildup play as Lucy Newlin found Kelsey Branson in the middle of the attacking third. Branson took a touch before laying off into Holdenried's path, with the junior calmly slotting her shot inside the right upright.
Illinois countered in the 61st minute to halve the defecit as Cayla Jackson pounced on a loose ball off a corner kick delivery, beating Tanner Ijams and the UW defense to make it 2-1.
Holdenried nearly punched back immediately after the restart, missing her brace by mere inches at the near post.
However, Washington was able to salt away the remaining minutes expertly, moving to 2-0-1 in Big Ten play, slotted in a three-way tie for the lead league on seven points.
The Huskies will hit the road for a two-match swing to the Hoosier State next week, battling Indiana on Thursday and Purdue on Sunday. Both matches will be available for streaming through B1G+.
