SEATTLE -- A cross-state then cross-country road trip leads the Husky volleyball team to the end of the non-conference road this week. Washington and Washington State meet in the annual volleyball Apple Cup this Wednesday night in Pullman, Wash. and from there the Huskies will head all the way down to Lexington, Ky. for one big non-conference finale, playing at sixth-ranked Kentucky on Saturday at 10 a.m. Pacific time.
Wednesday night's showdown with the Cougars starts at 7 p.m. in Bohler Gymnasium and will be streamed online via ESPN+ The Saturday matinee at Kentucky will also be streamed via SEC Network Plus, accessible in the ESPN app.
The Dawgs will look to build some momentum against the two different cats this week before Big Ten play begins on the road again at Purdue and Indiana next week. Washington is 4-4 and looking to bounce back from a tough loss last Sunday at home to San Diego, as the Huskies were closing in on a fourth-straight win, but couldn't close out the Toreros after taking a 2-1 lead. Plenty of positives from the weekend included great work from the pin hitters as Kierstyn Barton hit .325 with 4.25 kills per set on the week and freshman Simona Mateska just had her best match thus far with 19 kills, hitting .366 against USD. But Washington has room to grow defensively, where the Huskies are allowing a .241 attack percentage which equals the .241 mark the Huskies are hitting themselves.
Washington State is 5-3 having won its past three matches. Two losses came to top-25 opponents in No. 24 Dayton (1-3) and No. 23 Utah (0-3). Wednesday is WSU's home opener. The Cougars are hitting .252 for the season and allowing a .218 opponent mark. Despite playing middle blocker, Lucie Blazkova is leading WSU in kills by a hefty margin with 3.47 per set, hitting a scorching .482 and adding 1.23 blocks per set. Eliana Ti'a adds 2.93 kills per set and Melina Christodoulou averages 2.71 per set. The Huskies beat the Cougars in Seattle last season in the first post-Pac-12 meeting between the teams, but UW has not won in Pullman since 2017.
Washington and Kentucky last played in the 2020 NCAA Semifinals, where UK won in four sets and then won its first NCAA title. The Wildcats are currently ranked No. 6 with a 5-2 record, having only lost to No. 1 Nebraska in five sets, and No. 7 Pittsburgh in straight sets. UK has beaten one common opponent with UW, defeating SMU in four sets. OH Brooklyn DeLeye is posting big stats with 4.88 kills per set on a .329 attack percentage, with Eva Hudson also posting 3.67 kills per set. Molly Tuozzo is averaging 4.13 digs per set and leads the team with 12 aces. Kentucky advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tourney one year ago.
