SERIES HISTORY
The Huskies own a 6-2-2 record against UNLV in the all-time series, dating back to the first matchup in 1975. Most recently, Washington claimed a 3-0 win in Las Vegas in 2004.
LAST MEETING (9/11/04)
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Junior midfielder Mike Chabala scored one goal and assisted another, leading No. 18 Washington men's soccer to a 3-0 victory over host UNLV in its opening match of the UNLV FILA Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., Friday evening. It was the third shutout of the year for the Huskies, who have allowed just one goal in four games this season.
Chabala put the Huskies (3-1-0) on the board first in the 38th minute, scoring on a penalty kick. It was the first collegiate goal for the Husky central midfielder, having already tallied six assists in his career.
Clinging to a 1-0 lead at halftime, the Huskies wasted no time getting a second goal after the intermission, as sophomore forward Kevin Forrest scored on a header from a throw-in by Chabala, just one minute and four seconds into the second frame.
Washington sealed the win on senior forward Casey Armstrong's second goal of the season in the 67th minute, off an assist from freshman forward Ely Allen.
The Huskies outshot UNLV (1-2-0) 15-8, and finished with a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks. UW junior goalkeeper Chris Eylander made three saves to record his third shutout of the season.
Washington will next play No. 13 Creighton on Sunday, Sept. 12, at 2:30 p.m. Creighton upset UCLA in the first game of the tournament, 3-2. UCLA and UNLV will face off at noon on Sunday.
BATTLED BACK FOR A POINT
The Huskies secured their first result of the season on Thursday, earning a point in a 1-1 draw with UC Davis at Husky Soccer Stadium. After falling behind earlier in the match, Washington pushed for the equalizer and was rewarded in the 76th minute. Egor Akulov pushed the ball up the field to Zach Ramsey who laid off a perfect ball to Charlie Kosakoff. After getting past the goalkeeper, the Husky No. 9 hit a tight angle shot to bring the Huskies level. It's Kosakoff's first goal of the season and the seventh of his career. Akulov earned his first career assist on the play and Ramsey contributed his first career point and assist.
SEARCHING FOR THE FIRST WIN
The Huskies are 0-2-1 through the first three games of the season and looking for their first win of 2025 on Sunday against UNLV. The last time Washington failed to record a win within the first three games of the season was in 1994 when the Dawgs dropped three straight losses before collecting a win in the fourth game of the campaign.
Under the direction of Jamie Clark, Washington has never recorded more than seven losses in a season.
OFFENSIVE OPPORTUNITIES
The Huskies have been applying the pressure in the first three games, recording more shots than their opponents in each game.
COMEBACK AGAINST BEAVERS FALLS SHORT
Richie Aman scored a screamer in the second half to pull the Huskies within one, but Washington was unable to complete the comeback, falling 2-1 to the Beavers.
The first goal for the Huskies this season came when Aman controlled the ball on the left flank and cut through multiple defenders before he launched a right-footed shot at the top of the box. His shot drilled the top right corner, putting the Huskies on the board.
For the second-straight game, Washington outshot its opponent but was unable to get the win. The Huskies launched 12 shots in the game, one more than the Beavers' 11.
DAWG DEBUTS
7 Huskies have made their Washington debuts in the first two matches of the season. Levi Bieber, Cameron Cruz, Clarens Dollin, Carter Gay, Osato Enabulele, Zack Meier, and Kevin Hernandez all featured during the opening weekend.
MIDFIELDER TO WATCH
Senior Richie Aman has been named a midfielder to watch by the United Soccer Coaches. Aman is one of 31 players recognized in the organization's list.
United Soccer Coaches has announced the Midfielders on its NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Players to Watch lists for the 2025 intercollegiate season. The lists are compiled and released by the Division I All-America Committees to promote college soccer leading up to the official start date for the regular season later this month. The lists include United Soccer Coaches All-Americans and All-Region players from 2024 who are scheduled to return for the 2025 season.
Aman was named a Big Ten Player to Watch a season ago, and was a consistent force for the Huskies on the pitch. He led Washington to a second round appearance in the NCAA Tournament after playing in all 21 matches, making 18 starts.
The Hanover, New Hampshire native registered 33 shots in 2024, the second-most of any Husky. He returns to Montlake for his senior season after being invited to the MLS Showcase last year. He has 17 career points, the most of any returning player.
BIG TEN PLAYERS TO WATCH
Egor Akulov, Richie Aman, and Charlie Kosakoff each were recognized as Big Ten Players to Watch.
Akulov, a redshirt junior defender, started all 21 games a season ago and amassed 1921, the second most minutes on the team, trailing only starting goalkeeper Jadon Bowton. The Redmond, Washington native tallied two goals on the season, and went the distance, playing every minute of 20 games, including 110 minutes against Michigan State in the Big Ten Tournament and Seattle U in the NCAA Tournament. Akulov was instrumental in helping the Huskies advance to the second round of the national tournament, scoring the winning penalty of the penalty shootout to send the Huskies to the next round.
Aman, a senior midfielder, figures to be a focal point of the Huskies' attack. Last week, he was also named a Midfielder to Watch by United Soccer Coaches. Aman leads all returning players with 17 career points, including a career-high seven points a season ago. He has four goals and nine assists to his name and he set career-high marks in 2024 in games played (21), games started (18), goals (2), points (7), shots (33), shots on goal (12), and minutes (1455).
Kosakoff, a junior forward, will be a leader on offense for Washington in 2025. With five goals and four assists last season, the San Diego native will again look to lead from the front. Kosakoff played in 20 matches in 2024, making 16 starts. Twice last season he tied his career-best points total when he scored a goal and chipped in an assist against Air Force and at Indiana.
