UW's Rocek Named Big Ten Rowing Athlete Of The Year
May 21, 2025 | Women's Rowing
Washington's Aisha Rocek has been named Big Ten Women's Rowing Athlete of the Year, the conference announced today.
Additionally, the conference announced the women's rowing All-Freshman team, which included three Huskies: coxswain Isabel Michaelson and rowers Violet Holbrow Brooksbank and Chloe Sheppard.
Last Sunday, following the Huskies' sweep of all seven grand finals at the Big Ten Championships, six Huskies were named to the All-Big Ten Team. Rocek, Marilou Duvernay-Tardif and Zola Kemp were named to the first team, while Sophie Houston, Megan Lee and Cillian Mullen made the second team.
Rocek, a junior from Como, Italy, is the third Husky to win conference athlete of the year over the last seven seasons, as Brooke Mooney (2018) and Ella Cossill (2021) were both named Pac-12 Women's Rowing Athlete of the Year.
After taking the 2023-24 school year off to train and compete at the 2024 Olympic Games, Rocek returned this year and has spent the entire spring in the Huskies' varsity eight crew, which wrapped up the season with a Big Ten Championship. She and her boatmates will row at NCAA Championships May 30-June 1.
Rocek rowed in the Huskies' varsity eight in both 2022 and 2023 before taking the year off. In addition to competing in the 2024 Olympics in Paris, she rowed in the pair for Italy at the 2020 Games in Tokyo. Her twin brother, Patrick, is a World Championships gold medalist in the Italian lightweight quad sculls.
